Questions - HOCl, explained
Hypochlorous acid, decoded.
The honest, beautifully-simple guide to the molecule everyone's misting. What it is, who it's for, and why the small details - concentration, pH, packaging - make all the difference. Meet the mist ->
01
The basics
What exactly is hypochlorous acid?
Hypochlorous acid (HOCl) is a gentle molecule the body already recognizes. Stabilized for skincare, it's most often delivered as a fine facial mist to refresh, soothe, and cool the look of stressed or reactive skin.
Is hypochlorous acid the same thing as bleach?
No. HOCl and household bleach share some chemistry on paper but behave completely differently. The deciding factor is pH: at skin-friendly pH you get gentle hypochlorous acid, not the harsh stuff.
Why does my HOCl mist smell faintly like a pool?
That light, clean note is simply the active doing its job. It's normal, fades within seconds as the mist air-dries, and is a sign the formula is fresh.
Does concentration actually matter?
Hugely. Too low and there's little point; too high and it stops being gentle. We stabilize ours at 0.02% (200 ppm).
02
For your skin
Is it safe for sensitive, reactive skin?
This is exactly what HOCl is loved for - it's one of the gentlest options out there: fragrance-free and well tolerated. Patch test first.
Can it help with breakout-prone skin?
It helps keep the skin's surface feeling clean and calm without the harsh dryness of high-alcohol or peroxide products.
What about redness and rosacea-prone skin?
A favorite use: mist a light layer after cleansing to calm the look of flushing and reactivity - especially after heat, sun, or a workout.
Can I use it after a facial, peel, or microneedling?
HOCl is a classic post-treatment soother because it calms the look of irritation without stinging. Always follow your provider's aftercare guidance first.
03
How to use it
What's the right way to apply it?
Hold the bottle 6-8 inches from clean skin and mist evenly. Let it air-dry - no rubbing, no rinsing. Re-mist whenever skin feels warm, tight, or stressed.
Where does it sit in my routine?
Treat it like a toner: right after cleansing, before serums and moisturizer, morning and night.
Can I layer it with retinol, vitamin C, or acids?
Generally yes. If your skin is very reactive, introduce one new product at a time.
Face only, or can I mist my body too?
Go for it. Chest, back, shoulders - anywhere prone to sweat or heat.
04
The formula
What's the exact concentration and pH?
Stabilized at 0.02% hypochlorous acid (200 ppm) and balanced to pH 5.5. The complete ingredient list is water and hypochlorous acid - no alcohol, no fragrance, no preservatives.
How should I store it, and why does it matter?
HOCl is sensitive to air, light, and heat, so keep your bottle cool, dry, and out of direct sunlight, and never freeze it.
How long will one bottle last?
A full 200mL (6.8 fl oz) lasts roughly 2-3 months of daily misting. Use within 12 months of opening for peak performance.
Why choose Revallure over other HOCl mists?
We make ours in our own lab for a fresher, more stable formula, tighter quality control, and a fairer price on a generous 200mL.
